Binnenland: Toos van der Valk, vrouw van Gerrit van der Valk van het familiehorecaconcern Van der Valk, wordt vanuit haar huis in Nuland ontvoerd door drie Italiaanse criminelen. Na betaling van 12 tot 13 miljoen gulden (ongeveer 5,5 miljoen euro) aan losgeld is ze drie weken later weer vrij.

Buitenland: Decembermoorden. Vijftien leden van de Surinaamse bevolking worden op bevel van Desi Bouterse doodgeschoten.

Sport: Jimmy Connors wint de US Open door de Tsjech Ivan Lendl te verslaan, en lost een dag later John McEnroe na 58 weken af als nummer één op de wereldranglijst der tennisprofessionals.
