Binnenland: Toos van der Valk, vrouw van Gerrit van der Valk van het familiehorecaconcern Van der Valk, wordt vanuit haar huis in Nuland ontvoerd door drie Italiaanse criminelen. Na betaling van 12 tot 13 miljoen gulden (ongeveer 5,5 miljoen euro) aan losgeld is ze drie weken later weer vrij.

Buitenland: Decembermoorden. Vijftien leden van de Surinaamse bevolking worden op bevel van Desi Bouterse doodgeschoten.

Sport: Formule 1-coureur Gilles Villeneuve uit Canada, vader van oud Formule 1-coureur Jacques Villeneuve, komt om het leven tijdens kwalificatie voor de Grote Prijs van België na aanraking met de auto van Jochen Mass..
