Binnenland: Simon Carmiggelt schrijft op 8 oktober, een dag na zijn 70e verjaardag, zijn laatste “Kronkel” in Het Parool.

Buitenland: Microsoft brengt de eerste MS-Word versie op de markt.

Sport:  In de laatste wedstrijd van de kwalificatieronde voor het EK voetbal 1984 wint Spanje met 12-1 van Malta, net voldoende om zich te plaatsen ten koste van Nederland. Er gaan stemmen op dat spelers van Malta zijn omgekocht.
