Sport: Nelli Cooman behaalt bij de Europese indoorkampioenschappen in Madrid een wereldrecord op de 60 meter: 7 seconden rond. In augustus wordt zij ook Europees buitenkampioene op de 100 meter, in een Nederlands record van 11,08 seconden.

Film: Bij de 58ste Oscaruitreiking is de film Out of Africa de grote winnaar met zeven Oscars, onder andere voor beste film, beste regie, beste geluid en beste muziek.
